Copyright and Licensing
This page explains who owns an article published in JBSMR and what readers may do with it.
Authors keep the copyright
Authors keep full copyright in their articles. By submitting, they grant the journal a non-exclusive licence to publish, distribute and archive the article and to deposit its metadata and full text with registries and preservation services.
Licence to readers
Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) licence. Under it, anyone may:
- Share: copy and redistribute the article in any medium or format;
- Adapt: remix, transform and build on the article;
on two conditions:
- Attribution: credit the authors and the journal, link to the licence and say whether changes were made, without suggesting that the authors or the journal endorse the reuse;
- NonCommercial: the reuse must not be primarily for commercial advantage or payment.
Commercial reuse
Anyone wanting to use an article commercially (for example in a paid product, a commercial training course or advertising) must ask the authors, as copyright holders, for permission. The journal can pass requests on through the Contact page.
Third-party material
If an article contains figures, tables or long quotations owned by someone else, the authors must obtain permission before publication. That material stays under its owner's terms, not the article's licence.
Reuse by authors
Authors may reuse their own articles in any way, including in books, theses, lectures, websites and repositories, with no embargo.
Copyright line
Each article carries the line "© [year] The Author(s)" with a statement of the CC BY-NC 4.0 licence, as in the published issues.
